What Actually Matters on a Kitchen Display
Pretty screens don't help if cooks can't read the ticket when it gets busy.
Kitchen displays fail in dull ways. Tickets that are hard to scan. Stages that don't match how your line is staffed. Online orders that show up late or in a different format than counter orders. Then people go back to printers and yelling.
During a rush the screen is a tool, not decoration. You need the order, how long it's been sitting, pickup vs delivery, and the specials, without squinting.
Stages should match your kitchen. "New → Preparing → Cooking → Ready" is a default, not a law. Pizza shops care about oven timing. Other places care about expo vs grill. The board should follow your stations.
The other killer is feeding the KDS from three different order sources. ApexSlice keeps counter, online, and phone orders on the same path so the board stays readable when volume spikes.
If you're shopping KDS features, skip the marketing video. Ask to see a live board under load.
